Printed in 1726, the Orpheus Caledonius was William Thompson's collection of fifty arrangements of Scottish songs. Most of the arrangements were listed without composer, which might therefore appear to demonstrate an early paradigm of folk musicians freely borrowing each other’s words and music without attribution, except that its index specifically ascribes the remaining melodies to David Rizzio, the Italian valet of Mary Queen of Scots, who more than 150 years earlier had been the victim of one of history’s most infamous and gruesome murders...
